Outside of that area, especially at the beach, you’ll likely need a car to get around. While some beach spots have nearby restaurants, you won’t have the same level of walkability as downtown.
St. Augustine Beach is typically about a 10 to 15 minute drive from the Historic District. It’s close enough to easily go back and forth during your trip, but not something you would realistically walk. Most visitors staying at the beach plan to drive into downtown for sightseeing or dinner.

These hotels offer direct or very easy access to the sand, which makes them especially convenient if your trip is centered around the beach.
Spring and fall are generally the best times to visit, thanks to comfortable weather and fewer crowds. Summer is the busiest season, with hotter temperatures but ideal beach conditions. Winter is quieter and can be a good time to explore downtown without the crowds, although it’s less suitable for beach-focused trips.
Hotel prices can vary quite a bit depending on the season and location. Budget options typically fall in the $120 to $200 range per night, while mid-range hotels are often between $180 and $300. Luxury properties, especially in prime locations, can go well above $300 per night. Beachfront and downtown hotels tend to be the most expensive due to their convenience and demand.
If you are staying in the Historic District and plan to spend most of your time there, you do not need a car. However, if you’re staying at the beach or plan to explore different areas, having a car makes things much easier and more flexible.
